National Education Technology Plan

Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology

According to the National Education Technology Plan, the Obama administration is focused on raising the number of college graduates from 39% to 60%, and preparing all graduating seniors to succeed in college and career goals. Keeping these educational goals in mind, the National Education Technology Plan has set three goals to transform our education process: we should be clear about what we are trying to achieve; we should work together to change structures and processes so they are effective, efficient, and flexible; we must constantly monitor our progress; and we must be responsible and accountable for the outcomes along the way.

Learning

We must find ways to engage our students in relevant educational experiences that prepare them for the world in which they will live. Our students learning styles, interests, and opinions should be taken into consideration as we plan these lessons. We should be turning the reins over to our students, preparing them to take control of their own learning through the effective use of technology.

Teaching

We must create connected teaching environments so that our teachers are working together, rather than in isolation. Our teachers need to be able to rely on each other as they navigate the changes that are ahead of us in education. This is not something we will do well if we continue to work in isolation. Using connected teaching allows us to access effective teaching and learning resources.

Staff Development

The National Education Technology Plan suggests teachers create online learning communities in which they share content, resources, and expertise. Through these learning communities teachers will be able to learn from each other as they offer suggestions, ask questions, and share lesson outcomes.
